Guess what day it is?? Ingredient of the week day! This week, we’re talking about hemp seeds.

The first time I encountered hemp seeds was in a recipe from Oh She Glows (for these Irresistible Chewy Trail Mix Cookies). Having some leftover after the cookie making, I was pretty excited to find out a) how easily they enhanced my current meal situations, and b) that they had some significant health benefits.

This also helped me justify making these cookies (my justification threshold is like 1 healthy ingredient per recipe, last weekend I snuck some flax seeds into the cookies I made unbeknownst to my boyfriend).

Anyway, happy hemp seed day, and I hope you find some cookie justification in here!

Health Benefits

Fiber. Mmm, fiber. Fiber helps your body regulate blood sugar, maintain weight, and of course, helps with healthy bowels (source). As a pregnant person, I can now say first hand that there are few things more frustrating than constipation. Unlike with flax seeds, keeping the shell ON (i.e. buying them that way) is what gives you all the fiber, so keep that in mind when you’re shopping! (source) Yay digestion!

Protein. Hemp seeds are also one of the best sources of plant based protein! In 2-3 tablespoons, you can get about 11 grams of protein (source) which is a pretty good bang for your buck. They also have all the necessary amino acids to be considered a full protein. I was a vegetarian for a few years during my heavy running days, so finding alternative protein sources was important.

Omegas. Omegas aren’t produced naturally by our body, so we have to ingest what we need. Hemp seeds have both Omega 3s and 6s, which are good for the skin and bones. (source).
